GLOBAL FOCUS
What's In a Name?
World Mission has been re-named Global Focus; Dave Richards explains
God’s concern is for the whole world, not just Edinburgh or the UK. It is all-encompassing. St Paul’s and St George’s has supported Mission Partners for many years around the world. Increasingly, we have also developed new links: with Kisumu in Kenya, with Cheryl’s Home in Nairobi, and through many short-term mission trips to different countries. Our global focus has widened, therefore, and we’re thinking more about issues of global poverty, injustice and suffering. With this in mind, the World Mission team is now the Global Focus team.
Our Mission Partners
The new Global Focus team continues to support all of St Paul’s and St George’s work outside of Edinburgh, including our Mission Partners. Their latest news is published in Globetrotter; much of which is also available online on our Parters page. We support them financially, through prayer and through encouragement, and they remain a vital part of our church’s global focus.
"Global Focus is concerned about how we engage with what God is doing in the wider world."
New links and challenges
Over the past couple of years we’ve also developed links with communities in Kisumu, Kenya through World Vision, and younger members of St Paul’s and St George’s have built and developed their own relationships with children at Cheryl’s Home in Nairobi. In addition to this, others in the church have been involved in short-term mission trips, in a variety of ways and in many different countries. It’s exciting to discover new ways to help us think about global issues such as poverty, injustice and suffering, such as the Just Christmas project.
We must also remember that, although people in other countries often have fewer physical and financial resources than we do, their faith resources are often much greater than ours! We can learn from them, to be more dependent on God and to trust him in every aspect of our lives. Together we can be richer and have a more holistic understanding of Christianity. We may live in different parts of God’s world and worship in different places but we belong — they are part of us, and we are part of them. They too have concerns about their children, youth, environment, justice, and poverty. By sharing these concerns, we can all begin to better understand what it means to be Christian.
